Travelling solo can be both overwhelming and exciting at the same time. One of the major concerns with traveling alone is safety and security. While we will share some tips for your solo travel, please do a lot of research and put safety measures in place before your trip.
However traveling alone is worth it as it pushes you out of your comfort zone and gives you an increased sense of confidence.
- ALONE DOESN’T MEAN LONELY
Thankfully we’re in a digital era. You can explore top social media sites of the country you’re visiting and curate a list of the events beat suited to your flair; from wine tasting, to art, to food fairs. There’s a lot you can find that may interest you. It’s an easy way to meet people you share similar interests with and make new friends. New age media can also be very helpful when you feel homesick. Travel with some of the favorite things you usually like to indulge in like books, music and movies so you can escape to indulgence in them if you have to.
- GO WHERE THE LOCALS GO
This is one of the best ways to travel like a local. Visit Local coffee shops, restaurants and flea markets. These are great places to meet locals or fellow travelers. You may even just sit there for awhile, listen to music, relish the ambience and watch people.
- SPEAK WITH THE LOCALS
Be bold if you can. You’ll meet new people from different countries and cultures. Talk to them. Ask for directions or recommendations. Don’t bother about age differences because you may be pleasantly surprised. Keep an open mind. There are interesting people all around you and many of them have something to offer if you give them a chance. And guess what, they would like to meet you too!
- LEARN THE LOCAL LINGO
While it’s possible to get by in English, wouldn’t it be interesting to throw in some local lingo here and there? Learning basic local greetings, phrases and gestures can go a long way in connecting with people, giving you a whole new perspective on the destination you’re visiting.
- TOUR WITH SMALL GROUPS
This is a fun and safe way to meet people and discuss the tour experience with them. I usually start touring early so that there would be less crowd, less lines and enough natural light for the perfect pictures – just a quick tip. LOL!
- BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE
This is a must do! Hey, you’re all alone and you don’t want to fall into any complications like flight delays and cancellations. Buy it for your peace of mind.
- USE A TRAVEL COMPANY.
This would give you a sense of safety. A good travel assistance company with help with the right hotels, tours, security briefing, logistics and escorts whilst also checking up on you often.
